Lawyer Pleads Guilty to Illegally Soliciting Clients

May 30, 2002 12:27 am US/Eastern (New York-AP) -- A Staten Island lawyer is being accused of illegally soliciting clients in a massive automobile insurance fraud ring. Prosecutors say 29-year-old Volf Birman has pleaded guilty to violating New York state's Judiciary Law. His Brooklyn based law firm has also pleaded guilty to enterprise corruption.

Birman admitting to using his office manager to illegally solicit clients to participate in a multi-million dollar scam. The clients would create bogus accidents and submit fake claims to auto insurance companies.

Birman faces disbarment.
